National Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

Membership in the Gouverneur Chapter of the National Honor Society

Membership in the National Honor Society is an honor extended by the faculty of Gouverneur Central School. To be eligible, a candidate must be found worthy in four areas of merit: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

To be eligible for membership consideration, a candidate must have a cumulative average (beginning in 9th grade) of 90% or above, without rounding. Although a person may have an eligible scholastic average, this does not guarantee membership.

A candidate must demonstrate that he/she has been involved in LEADERSHIP and SERVICE opportunities in and/or out of school.

Standards for Current Members

Scholarship: Students must maintain a cumulative average of 87% and cannot have any class average below 65%.

Leadership & Service: The student must continue to remain active in both school and community affairs by completing a required number of volunteer hours, as described in the NHS Bylaws. The student is also required to attend Honor Society functions unless he/she has contacted the advisor and received an excuse.

Character: The student must adhere to all rules of the school and the community. Any flagrant violation will result in the immediate dismissal of the member. A series of minor infractions may also result in dismissal.
