GPS for Success is a new multi-platform website that students and adults can use to learn about career opportunities, income potential, and education/training requirements. The website features 16 "career clusters" that have been identified nationally and regionally as experiencing a shortage of skilled workers entering the workforce. GPS for Success was developed by WPBS-DT, Watertown Public Media, and presented by the Northern New York Community Foundation in collaboration with the Jefferson/Lewis & St. Lawrence/Lewis BOCES.
The Youth Portal links youth ages 14 to 24 to resources that help them explore for the future and prepare for careers. The Youth Portal has information ranging from getting working papers to preparing for a job interview. The Youth Portal also has information and resources for parents to help guide their children through careers starting with elementary school to helping their children manage their career choices.
Interested in a career in healthcare? https://fdrhpo.org/ The FDRHPO (Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization) website offers a wealth of information and resources in the North Country. One of the goals of the FDRHPO is to "grow our own workforce" by providing opportunities for students to learn about various jobs in the field of healthcare. To engage students early on, FDRHPO offers high school students the opportunity to job shadow in a professional healthcare setting under "Opportunities in Healthcare". The job shadow experience is valuable to students in shaping future career choices, preparing college applications and networking with healthcare professionals in their community. There is also information on MASH camps (Medical Academy of Science and Health), post-secondary education, and more!
NAHEC (Northern Area Health Education Center) also provides opportunities for students to connect to careers in the field of healthcare. This includes job shadow placements, a quick self-assessment, interest inventory, programs available leading to a career in healthcare and much more. NAHEC is one of nine centers in New York State offering statewide capacity for addressing healthcare workforce needs.
