One type of financial aid is offered in the form of scholarships. Scholarships are FREE money that does not have to be paid back! Scholarships and awards are offered by many community groups and organizations as well as individual colleges so you should check out all resources.

Going Merry

What is Going Merry? It is a free scholarship search and application platform that allows students to find and apply for scholarships faster. On Going Merry, students are matched with eligible scholarships and then apply directly from the website. Applications are auto-filled with any information students have already provided. Students can also apply to multiple scholarships with one application form and request documents like letters of transcript, right on the platform. They also even have mobile apps on iOS and Android.

Straight North Scholarship 2020

To qualify, undergraduate or graduate students must be majoring in a STEM field of study, and attending an accredited college or university based in the USA.

STEM Initiative Scholarship

The NYS STEM Incentive Program provides a full SUNY tuition scholarship to the top 10 percent of students in each NYS high school if they pursue a STEM degree in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree program and agree to live in NYS and work in a STEM field in NYS for five years after graduation. Specific guidelines for this program can be found on the website. Programs of study must result in an approved occupation. Failure to meet the terms of the program will result in a monies converting to a 10-year student loan plus interest.

Teens for Alzheimer’s Awareness Scholarship

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America holds a yearly teen scholarship essay contest which asks high school seniors who have been affected by Alzheimer’s disease to write about their experience and how it impacted their lives. In 2018, AFA awarded $30,000 in college scholarships to contest winners, including a $5,000 grand prize.

The Gouverneur Kiwanis Club is the parent organization of the Gouverneur Key Club. The foundation of both organizations is public service. With that in mind, the Kiwanis Club will be awarding a $1000 scholarship to the graduating Key Club member who was an active member during the previous school year (2020-21) and demonstrated substantial effort and accomplishment in community service. Particular attention will be given to applicants who made significant effort and contribution to their community during the COVID crisis. The recipient chosen will have maintained an accumulative B average or higher, and will be required to provide proof of acceptance in a minimum two-year accredited program.

Horatio Alger Career and Technical Scholarship

Air Force Academy Scholarships

The United States Air Force Academy, located just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a military academy for officer candidates for the United States Air Force. An Academy education is valued at more than $416,000, yet there is no cost to cadets. What is required in return is a commitment to serve as an officer in the Air Force. The length of commitment depends on your career path and other, such as graduate or medical school, that may extend it. Elks Emergency Grants

These grants are for any student who will attend college or is currently attending college that has a disabled parent that is a member of the Elks. This grant is also available for a student whose parents was n Elk at the time of death. This grant, for up to $4,000 a year, is NOT an academic scholarship and can be renewed each year of college attendance. Deadline: on-going.

The Excelsior Scholarship

Student must be a resident of NYS and have resided in NYS for 12 continuous months prior to the beginning of the term and have a combined federal adjusted gross income of $125,000 or less. See scholarship link for additional requirements and deadline information.

Firemen's Association HELP Tuition Reimbursement Program

Firemen's Association of the State of New York Higher Education Learning Plan is a tuition reimbursement program for students attending community colleges up to 80 credit hours. Courses in any area can be taken. Student volunteers are eligible to have up to 100% of their tuition paid to them in exchange for fulfilling specific requirements with a volunteer fire department. This incentive is being offered to help address a shortage of members with New York Volunteer Fire Departments. ROTC

With high costs of attending college, more and more students are considering Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs to help pay for college. ROTC is a college program offered at over 1,700 colleges and universities across the United States. ROTC prepares young adults to become officers in the U.S. military. In exchange for a paid college education and a guaranteed post-college career, cadets commit to serve in the military after graduation. As detailed below, each service branch has its own take on ROTC and ROTC scholarships. The Coast Guard does not have ROTC program.
